(U.S. Air Force photo/Dennis Rogers) | | Moon Flower And The White Winged Dove One pristine twilight a White Winged Dove Flew high into the Sky, exulting in his power and freedom of flight. He flew so high he could see the glittering face of the moon. A Flower fell from the moon. The flower fell twisting and turning to the earth. The dove saw that she was precious and rare, and was mesmerized by her luminescent petals. She landed in A meadow of lily's and took root. The White Winged Dove came and watched her each twilight. He saw that the Lillie's of the meadow Shunned her because her petals were silvery and bright. The Lily's said she wasn't a flower at all! Only a weed. The Moon Flower Wept and wished for love but found none. So The White Winged Dove came each twilight and sang to her. She could not understand his song for nine hundred and ninety nine nights. Because the languages of Flowers and Doves were too different. On the thousandth twilight she understood his song so they began to converse. They conversed about all things. He told her of Doves and the Sky. She told him of Flowers and Earth. Each twilight he came and spoke with her until she fell into a peaceful slumber. Moon Flower was unhappy, she did not know she was a Moon Flower and could not understand why she could not find a mate among the lilies. None of the flowers were like her and could not love a moon flower. After one thousand more nights Moon Flower asked the Dove why he did not have a mate and came to converse with her each twilight. I have made a choice to come each night and comfort you until you find a mate, if I had A mate of my own I could not come to you. The Moon Flower asked why he would do such a thing it was beyond comprehension. “Because I love you Moon Flower” replied the dove. I saw you fall from the Heavens one twilight and have loved you. NO! You cannot love me. I can never love a Dove of the Sky, I am A flower of the Earth! I do not ask that you love me Moon Flower, My love for you is not in your heart but in my own. For a thousand twilights more the White Winged Dove came and talked with the Moon Flower. Then one twilight she was gone, if she died or found her true love The Dove Never knew. Some say if you can find their meadow of lilies that he still comes each twilight and sings. A Song about the night he saw a Flower fall from heaven. His long legs, slight build and narrow chest made him appear lanky. His reddish hair, his large dark brown eyes, and his straight noise suited him just fine. A good-looking fella; no getting around it. And, downright handsome when dressed in his best. ...He had a not too unpleasant disposition; easygoing most of the time but, he'd become nervous and excitable occasionally, and sometimes he'd get downright cantankerous. ...I knew him for three years. We spent an hour or two every afternoon together. Many weekends he and I enjoyed hours together walking through our woodlands, over alfalfa fields, between farmer's cornrows and along dusty back roads, and meandering creek banks. ...Astride my horse Bill; I'd see myself swinging into his saddle as an angry bear charged at us; chasing off a stalking mountain lion by banging my coffee tin against a frying pan and hanging onto Bill's tail as he pulls me across a swollen creek. I'd re-live my Uncle Vic's cowboy adventures as if his were mine. ...As I became a man I put away those youthful daydream adventures, but each of my sixty-something birthdays has reminded me -- I wanna be a cowboy."
